When Jesus Was on the Cross, You Were on His Mind

Text: “And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: 18Where they crucified him.” (John 19:17, 18)

Introduction: Have you heard the song, “WHEN HE WAS ON THE CROSS I WAS ON HIS MIND”?

Here are the words:

I’m not on an ego trip
I’m nothing on my own
I made mistakes, I often slip
Just common flesh and bones
But I’ll prove someday just why I say
I’m of a special kind
For when he was on the cross
I was on his mind.

1. When Jesus was on the Cross You were on His Mind! The first 3 Hours!! (John 19:18-27)

“8Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. 19And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. 21Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. 23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. 25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.”

The next stanza says:

The look of love was on his face
Thrones were on his head
The blood was on his scarlet robe
Stained a crimson red
Though his eyes were on the crowd that day
He looked ahead in time
For when he was on the cross
I was on his mind.

He knew me, yet he loved me
He whose glory makes the heavens shine
So unworthy of such mercy
Yet when he was on the cross
I was on his mind.

Yet when he was on the cross
I was on his mind.

Jesus cried out, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34)

2. When Jesus was on the Cross You were on His Mind! The last 3 hours!! (John 19:28-30)

“28After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. 30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”

Remember the words:

Yet when he was on the cross,
I was on his mind.

Jesus cries out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matt 27:46)

A little boy once misquoted, John 3:16…..For God so loved the world, that He gave his only FORGOTTEN SON…..
He meant BEGOTTEN. But technically speaking, God the Father, FORGOT His Son, in order to REMEMBER me and you!!

Literally becoming sin for us, who knew NO sin, Jesus Christ tasted death and experienced hell for all who would trust in Him. Our sin debt was paid in full! “JESUS PAID IT ALL”!

A holy God left heaven’s glory to live without sin in order to lay down His life as a substitute for sin!

Conclusion:

He knew me, yet he loved me
He whose glory makes the heavens shine
So unworthy of such mercy
Yet when he was on the cross
I was on his mind.

Let when he was on the cross
I was on his mind.

Love y’all,
