The Lord’s Great Faithfulness

Introduction: Has God been GOOD to you? Has He been FAITHFUL to supply your needs, {not wants}? What about sustaining your health? Can you honestly sing, “GREAT is Thy FAITHFULNESS”?

“Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,

There is no shadow of turning with Thee;

Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not:

As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be.

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—

Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!”

Even during a time of sadness and sorrow, Jeremiah the prophet boldly exclaimed that God was still FAITHFUL! The magnificent temple that the Lord had Solomon to build lay in ruins—burned to the ground by the Babylonian army in 586 B.C. The Jewish people were heartbroken and feeling despairing. Have you been there?

Yet, out of the rubble came these great words from the Lord to the weeping prophet, Jeremiah. “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” (Lam 3:22,23)

Interesting to note, the word “faithfulness” is אֱמוּנָה, which means set office, or faithful. More personally, it means stability, and steady. Does not that describe the God of the Bible? He is “stable” and “steady”. Why is that important? Because things around us are changing which can cause instability. But Jesus is the same! (Heb. 13:8)

This next stanza reveals that beautifully.

“Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,

Sun, moon and stars in their courses above

Join with all nature in manifold witness

To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—

Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!”

Speaking of the Lord’s Faithfulness, how about His removing the debt of our sin which attempts to hang over our heads like a black cloud. The songwriter penned the words magnifying God’s FAITHFULNESS in the following:

“Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;

Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,

Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—

Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.”

Try repeating the words to this song.

Conclusion: Perhaps you are facing a difficult time in your life. Remember that while the world may not be fair, and people may not be fair, the Lord Jesus is always fair. Therefore, we can sing, “GREAT is your FAITHFULNESS”!
